Residential Acoustics Design

Expert sound insulation solutions for your home. Meet district council requirements and create better living environments.

Our Services

Our experienced engineers help homeowners, architects and developers with cost-effective solutions to improve the acoustic design of properties.

Whether you need certification for building consent, a report for subdivision consent, advice on design improvements, or comprehensive acoustics engineering, we provide tailored solutions for residential developments throughout New Zealand.

Sound Insulation Design & Certificates

Many district councils require acoustic certificates when building near major roads or railways, or in specific zones where significant noise sources are anticipated (eg. entertainment or business mixed use). These certificates either prescribe a maximum internal noise level, or a sound insulation requirement for building elements. We prepare the documentation you need for building and/or resource consent.

What We Review

To prepare this certificate, we review:

  • The district plan rules relevent to your site.
  • Noise affecting your site, which we model from available information on traffic or other relevent noise sources and the local topography and surrounding buildings.
  • The sound reduction properties of your proposed external wall, roof/ceiling constructions and the selected windows and doors.
  • The area of each element, the receiving room volume and the surface finishes. This all allows us to determine the internal noise level.

To meet the required internal noise levels, it is common to upgrade plasterboard linings on walls and ceilings, or change the glazing specification.

If windows need to remain closed to achieve the required internal noise levels, alternative ventilation must be provided. This can be achieved through mechanical ventilation or openable windows on quieter sides of the building. Your architect or builder can provide further guidance on compliance with the NZ Building Code (Clause G4).

What You Receive

Acoustic design certificate suitable for district council submission with your building consent application, including specifications for all building elements affecting acoustic performance.

Design Audit

Noise issues are often present in houses, such as disruptive noise from kitchens or toilets or inadeqate soundproofing between rooms. These issues can be impractical or expensive to remedy after the fact, but can be avoided during the design process.

What We Review

We review your design for areas of potential conflict between noise generation and sensistive uses. This includes both people-generated noise and also from services such as plumbing, cooling, and extract fans.

What You Receive

Marked-up set of plans with accompanying information sheets explaining each recommendation. These documents are designed for easy discussion with your design team and builder to get costed and for you to make a decison on whether to implement.

Full Design Services

For more complicated or high-end developments, we are able to provide full design services. The best way to address acoustics issues is early in the design stage, considering the site and room layout, and building material philosophy.

Design Development

We work alongside your design team to integrate acoustic performance from concept through to detailed design:

  • Early-stage acoustic feasibility assessment
  • Performance criteria development
  • Construction system selection and specification
  • Detailed acoustic design documentation
  • Material and product specification

Construction Support

Our involvement continues through the construction phase to ensure the design intent is achieved:

  • Review of contractor shop drawings
  • Site inspection services (optional)
  • Construction queries and technical support
  • Compliance verification testing

When This Service Is Needed

Full design services are appropriate for projects with complex acoustic requirements, such as:

  • Multi-unit residential developments
  • High-specification homes in challenging acoustic environments
  • Projects requiring Building Code compliance verification
  • Developments where acoustic performance is a key design driver
